Where did people get the idea that the level with Mal was limbo? That wasn't limbo, it was a fourth dream that Cobbs and Ariadne went in to bring back Filcher. Limbo was the part at the beginning and near-end where Cobbs woke up on the beach and went to tell Saito to wake up.

What I don't understand is this: the dream at the beginning was supposed to be the same as the dream at the end where he tells Saito to wake up, right? But at the beginning when he woke up he woke up into another dream which marked the beginning of the Cobbs Inception. So how can the same point be the beginning and end of the plot?

>> ID: f268f6 0 No. 4704
>>4701
How can you be sure they are connected?
>> ID: 10d271 0 No. 4705
>>4701
They had established that when you die in the dream-world you go into limbo. Filcher died, so they went into limbo after him.

The very first scene is limbo. Then it cuts away to a two-level dream with the younger Saito. This is what Cobb comes out of, not limbo. They were two separate scenes.

>> ID: c56b9d 0 No. 4706
its because they threw tons of shit together and when people dont understand it they just tell themselves 'wow it must have been too deep for me this movie was awesome'
>> ID: e280a2 0 No. 4707
>>4705
But if that part with Filcher was limbo, how the hell did Aridene or whatever get in with them? She never died. I could've sworn that the "fifth level" was accessed by Cobb and Aridene using dream machines.
>> ID: 444463 0 No. 4709
>>4707
limbo is a dream, just a different kind of dream, it's accessible just like regular dreams. i believe that mal and cobb were shown to be hooked up to a dream machine when they woke up from limbo too. the question you should be asking yourself is "why was filcher in cobb's previously built limbo world instead of his own" aka "why am i so fascinated with penises.

p.s. u gay

Andrae, did you want them to use the REAL science of entering other people's dreams or what, I don't see why you have a problem with them making things up for a movie like this
>> ID: c56b9d 0 No. 4724
>>4718
its not them making things up its just them being inconstant

like can anyone answer me why they couldnt have warped in more guns into the ice fortress level or like a first aid kit to fix that japanese guys chest wound
>> ID: 7159ee 0 No. 4726
>>4724
there could be a number of reasons.

maybe the further you dive, the harder it is to access the materials you need.

maybe you need your architect to design the apparel and weaponry you're using. notice when they were in the hotel, only Cobb had a pistol.

perhaps it just takes a certain level of focus and imagination to create the weaponry.

There's actually very few confused questions and just lots of discussion and ideas.
It was pretty coherant for a 2 and a half hour film about a dream inside a dream inside a dream

inside a dream inside a dream
>> ID: 5e6fb9 0 No. 4755
They didn't dream up too much shit because that would manipulate the dream to an extent that even the passive parts of his subconscious would start to rebel and assault the architect.

Also, they probably couldn't dream up anything because of the whole "Mr. Charles" angle. To Fischer, the rest of the gang were just anti-extraction security protocols with no control over the dream state and could only interact on a very basic level. If they started manipulating the dream, Fischer would be aware that they have to be dreaming as well.

And to clear things up at the end because my friend was confused on why Fischer didn't identify them in the first class cabin, that was because they already explained that the people your sub-conscious creates in the dream are people you've met and seen before.

As for the flimsy limbo, who knows. Mal killed Fischer so that explains why she could drag him down there. She brought him there because she wanted to appeal to Cobb's nostalgia. I also disagree with that theory that Mal was real and trying to get Cobb to kill himself to finally wake up mainly because Mal didn't want him to kill himself in the end, but stay in limbo with her.

>> ID: e5d950 0 No. 4822
Well that was a great movie, open ended as hell because once you question a reality, you can pretty much go ahead and take any given point in the plot and say OH THIS WASN'T REAL because the movie destroys the concept of reality.

This is why the ending is so open ended, why people claim that Cobb was actually dreaming in various points in the movie (some say that he was actually in limbo throughout the entire movie, and that Mal really woke up, other say he was dreaming from the pointer where Yusuf gave him the sedative). It's intelligent but it's also a bit TOO easy. Still, a great movie, I give it a 9/10

I found a true diagram of the dreams, by the way.
>> ID: 17aff2 0 No. 4899
>>4893
This does make more sense since at the fourth level of the dream, they still knew it wasn't real. Limbo was supposed to be dangerous for a reason because you didn't know you were dreaming, especially if like with Cobb and Saito that it drops you off in different locations. It took them both together reminding each other to realize that what they see isn't real. It also explains why Saito was much older than Cobb even though Cobb went down into the fourth level before Saito, because he went on into the real limbo and not just the infinitely long fourth level.
>> ID: 07d778 0 No. 4917
>>4893
There is no fourth level. They drop right into limbo.
>> ID: e280a2 0 No. 4918
>>4917

People keep saying that, and I have no idea why. Do people not pay any fucking attention when the movie specifically states that you can only get to limbo through dying? Ariadne never dies, and it specifically shows that they go into the fourth level (and take Fischer with them) because they want to 'kick' him at the exact moment that they use the defibrilator in level 3 in order to revive him.
>> ID: 10d271 0 No. 4920
>>4918
But the defib IS the kick.

You don't kick someone from within the same dream you're kicking them out of.
>> ID: 17aff2 0 No. 4921

If the falling wasn't the kick, then why did she wake up when she fell?

Almost 200 pages in and people still don't know what happened. Such a DEEP movie.
>> ID: e280a2 0 No. 4963
>>4920

The fall was the kick. Cobb specifically stated in level 3 that if they used the defib at the exact same time that they kicked Fischer's consciousness (from level 4) back into level 3, it would prevent him from dying. Did any of you pay any attention at all while watching the movie or did you just read a plot summary or something?
>> ID: 10d271 0 No. 4966
>>4963
but why did dropping him in level four kick him into level three

that's not how it worked in any other dream
>> ID: 10d271 0 No. 4968
I'd download a cam to make sure what I think happened happened but im lazy.
>> ID: e280a2 0 No. 4978
>>4966

They explained that too, goddamn. You know how whenever you're dreaming and you suddenly feel like you're falling, and then you wake up? The same concept applies.
>> ID: 36259d 0 No. 5580
ok so im bumping this thread to ask one question

why is there gravity in the third level and deeper? if the hotel level is weightless, wouldnt the levels underneath it be weightless as well? the only reason i can think of is because it would be dumb for everyone to be floating around past then

great movie anyways, this is the one thing that i really didnt get
>> ID: e51144 0 No. 5592
>>5580
Falling in lvl 1 caused lack of gravity in lvl 2, but lack of gravity isn't really as much of a motion I guess.
