My week went significantly better than expected. I received a Bonk Helm as a random drop, and combined it with an extra Tyrolean and netted the hat I wanted most: Sergeant's Drill Hat.

Not even 3 hours later, I find a Pyro's Beanie as yet ANOTHER random drop. And last night, I finally had enough scrap metal to science 3 refined into a Respectless Rubber Glove, making me the proud owner of the first three Pyro hats now. Feels so good, man.

Or: how Valve's "idle fix" item limit actually works.

I'm sure some of you have already figured this out, but I thought I would put this out there as a friendly service to other TF2 players.

Thesis: People who do not idle get more items on TF2 than people that do idle, assuming they play any regular amount of time per week (5-20 hours).

I know what you're thinking, "But Tempest, if I idle i get like 20 items in 2 days no actual tf2 playing scrub can match dat shit unless they play like 40 hours a week" WRONG. When Valve updated the item drop system with the "weekly limit" they told us it was going to discourage idlers, but so far we haven't seen that. However, there are far more sinister things at play here.

For my example I am about to give, let us give a hypothetical 20 item a week limit. Once you hit 20 in one week, you are capped.

To many of you, this may mean "oh cool i only have to idle for 2 days a week as opposed to my usual 7" but this is incorrect. I've been doing some research (read: checking info on my own idling). The mysteries of the item limit have long been unknown friends, but no longer!

Let us say, for example, you are a very lucky chap and get an item every hour. In 20 hours of idling, you have reached your item limit for the week. One per hour is a very generous number, on AVERAGE it's less than that. 95% of all casual TF2 players play much less than 20 hours per week. We'll set, hypothetically, the average number of hours per non-idling non-comp TF2 player at 8. In those 8 hours of play for the week, you would have gotten 8 items, assuming your luck is the same.

Now comes Valve's mysterious system. If you reach the item cap for a week, from what I've seen so far, it does not work like everyone assumes. By now, everyone knows that the weekly item limit resets on a case-to-case basis, not a set day for everyone. What I've never seen anyone discuss, but what is definitely the case, is that if you mana
