Hello FA!

I'm curious as to how up-to-date my computer system is. I upgraded a few years ago, but I have absolutely no experience in modern-day specs and game requirements.

What do you think? How long will I be able to keep this machine, and/or what parts need upgrading the most?

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.16 GHz
GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB
4096 MB DDR2 Dual-Channel RAM
ASUSTeK P5N-D (Socket 775) Motherboard
BenQ G2200W 1680x1050 60hz monitor
Windows 7 64-bit
>> ID: b147f6 0 No. 10744
Oh yeah, it might be worth mentioning that my graphics card regularly overheats and crashes the graphics driver at a certain temperature, effectively crashing all OpenGL games and freezing Direct3D ones + my system for a few minutes. Also I get MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screens once in a while, but memory tests come out clean...

well obviously with problems like that then the gpu should be a high priority. i would suggest maybe a nvidia 560 or an ati 6870 if you have the money. if you were to want to upgrade the cpu then you would have to probably get a new mobo and ram. the monitor and OS are fine. as for the error i have no idea what's causing it. maybe some googling will give you some insight.

Pretty much everything is kind of out of date by modern standards. If you upgrade your gpu you'll see a more obvious performance improvement right away in terms of fps but it will still be bottlenecked by your old processor. This was my exact setup (except for a gigabyte mobo instead of the asustek) until six months ago when I bought a 460 GTX and that's exactly what happened to me. Unfortunately buying a new processor means getting a new mobo and ddr3 memory as well (motherboards that support your new processor probably won't support ddr2).

I've been staring at this build for a while (in pic) I think it's probably the best performance/cost value you can get right now.

I'd like to ask about recording (PC) video games. What do you use? What would you recommend using? Is there a free program I should check out or should I pirate/pay for something?

I promise I won't make stupid shit.

Fraps should be fine so long as you remember to have it record to a secondary hard drive
>> ID: abbd61 0 No. 11566
Why do you need to do that?
>> ID: 205dcb 2 No. 11577
You don't need to, but it's better if you do. It's all about keeping Fraps related hard drive activity isolated from your game's hard drive activity. If it's all on one drive, it winds up seeking around and that introduces lag that could have been avoided.
>> ID: b180a0 2 No. 11588
Basically >>11577, fraps records at such a high quality that it can't compress at the same time else it'd add too much load to the cpu - so it records everything at a huge bitrate instead (something ridiculous like a gb/minute), which means it's best to have a separate drive handle that else it affects the os/game etc and makes everything run like ass
>> ID: abbd61 1 No. 11599
Ah, I see. Thank you.

Is there a noticeable difference in sound quality between different sound cards? I'd like one that's PCI or PCI-e (if such things exist) relatively cheap with a stereo mix option. I have these really expensive headphones lying around and don't know if my internal sound card is limiting what I can hear.

oh neat, what did you get?
looks like some kinda 70s stereo amp
>> ID: 7cc684 0 No. 11055
the only thing you should be concerned about is interference from the computer. just buy an external DAC and be happy with it.

I got some Audio-Technica ATH-M50 headphones. They're not much for anything vocal or acoustic, but I can literally feel my molars vibrate when I play something with lots of bass.

I've also got some from the same company that are made for mixing but they don't keep noise in too well and aren't great for looks. If you want to know which headphones those are they're the ones with the purple grill on the sides of them.
>> ID: cb29db 0 No. 11344
you don't gotta tell me about my headphones baby ;) had em for years now

the DAC isn't really going to make a huge difference (unless of course you have audible static/interference currently)
if you're just looking to get the most out of your headphones, i wouldn't bother.
but if you're interested in the hobby? go for it. the ath-m50 are pretty easy to power, so looking into a nice source rather than a nice amp is definitely the way to go i think.
(then maybe wait for a new pair of headphones before getting a fancy amp)

Alright, so I have this side job resizing pictures for a database. I got a dump of all the files on the server, and they have been put in folders called Size 1 (for .tif files and .jpgs larger than 1024x768) and Size 2 (for resized .jpg images at or smaller than 1024x768). The people who made the dump are stupid, and this thing is way messier than it should be.

There are 1,330 files in Size 1 and 990 files in Size 2. Size 2 has some unique pictures that are not present in Size 1 because they did not need to be resized, but it also has some already re-sized pictures from Size 1. I have no clue about which files in Size 1 are already in Size 2, and I don’t want to do any unnecessary work. There are 1,660 unique pictures, and they all have to present in some form in the Size 2 folder. So, there are about 340 pictures in Size 1 that need to be resized and put in Size 2.

Is there a way that I can compare the two folders and see which files from Size 1 are not in Size 2, like some kind of program, or maybe a script or something? Here’s the caveat: my work computer is a Mac, so it won’t run windows programs, and the Finder on Macs is so fucking inefficient that I can’t just do what I usually do in Windows by copying the files into two extra folders, merging the small folder into the big folder, overwriting the existing files, and then deleting the files that are now highlighted, leaving the untouched files (and thus the files I need) ready for resizing.

I dont personally know how you would automate a comparison between a resized picture and its original to determine duplicates, at least with any degree of accuracy. I'm guessing if it were easy they wouldnt be paying you to do it.
>> ID: bf05c5 0 No. 11188
I'm assuming the pictures have different filenames in both folders btw. Because this is really easy to do if they kept the filenames the same after resizing.
>> ID: d90315 0 No. 11199
They actually do have the same file names. All of the images are named after their accension number, so the Size 1 and Size 2 images have the same names. That's why I'm asking here, this has got to be retardedly easy.

When I get back to work on Monday I'll try fdupes, that looks like it might be just what I'm looking for.
>> ID: bf05c5 0 No. 11200
batch resize one the Size 1 folder to the correct using imagemagick, then merge the folders with mv -n (no overwriting)?
>> ID: d90315 0 No. 11222
I don't think I'll be able to use ImageMagick because I don't have administrator access on the computer I'm using (I'm working at my college using the generic student username they give but still you'd think they'd let me be able to install things especially since I'm one of the only people who works in this specific department). This also makes it impossible for me to use any program that needs to be installed or requires something else to be installed, so fdupes looks like its out of the question.

I'm going to see if I can somehow get an admin account on the computer I work on, and if I can't I'll just take the fucking external hard drive home and work on it there.

after a few months of saving up for new parts, i finally made the upgrades i wanted to. however, the final transition wasn't perfect. i can't get my motherboard to recognize the fact that i've got headphones and not digital sound output (ASUS P7H55-M Pro), and i've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers to no avail, both through ASUS support and via the Realtek website.

any help would be appreciated.

yes, they just use realtek digital output

So my computer kinda broke today, power chord came unplugged or something and now when I boot it up I get an error. Obviously my cracked version of windows vista just fucked up and I wanted to get update it to 7 anyways. So im currently downloading windows 7 on my mac laptop. The files are .iso and I was wondering how I would go about putting them on a disk so I can put it on my other computer.

When I did it before, I found a random website recommending me a random program.

Seriously, ISO burning programs are a dime a dozen, and most-all of them work.

Everyone here either learned what you're asking through Google or through experience. The same goes for people on "random websites".

yo nerdz ive had this comp for almost 4 years and im thinking of upgrading after summer. this is my spec:

asus p5k
4gb ddr2 ram
8800gt 512mb
750w psu

should i get a new motherboard so i can upgrade my processor? or is a q6600 still good for gaming (the most recent thing ive played is portal 2 and that runs perfectly fine on max settings). i was originally gonna just upgrade my gfx card but i guess my comps gettin old now
>> ID: 701381 0 No. 10444
stick a £200 gfx card (those 560ti's look p sweet, or the 6950 if ur takei and like ati) into that and i think your good for another year or 2 minimum

also overclock the q6600 if you havent already. you can get to 3.6 on air with a good hs, even with the stock one you can hit 3-3.2 with no issues
>> ID: e130b7 0 No. 10455

im not into overclocking. i had my 8800gt clocked up quite a bit just over 2 years ago but then i updated my drivers and i couldnt oc it anymore so i havent bothered since
>> ID: e130b7 0 No. 10466
oh also i think the northbridge battery (or something idk) on my mobo is going cause in the past couple of months when i left my comp on for like 4 days straight at uni it would bluescreen and i had to turn it off for like 15 mins for it to run normally for the rest of the day

this is mainly why i wanna upgrade. ive got an antec p182 so i shouldnt have space trouble, although i wish id have bought a fucking case that wasnt so big or heavy
