The anime can seem slice-of-life due to its staggered presentation but the novels are really a mixture of romantic comedy and science fiction, and that's why I love it.

Also, I watch Haruhi for the Yuki. Waifu joking aside, Yuki is actually a really interesting character and anybody who claims she's a "Rei Clone" really hasn't looked too far into her. Kyon is also an interesting character, despite being an everyman, fill-in-the-blanks type of character.

I honestly don't know. It really hurt the series for a lot of people because of the episode they decided to show at the start turning tons off. The whole "but the climax will be halfway through" thing doesn't really hold up because honestly almost all Haruhi material past the first book (episodes 1-6 chronologically) is just fanservice for people who want more, much like Kagetsu Tohya compared to Tsukihime.

Imagine if Gurren Lagann had no more fighting after they skip to the future. They defeat Genome in episode 15 or 16, and then for the rest of the series, its just politics and they never fight again. They never fight the anti-spirals and the conclusion of the series is Simon realizing he isn't cut out for politics and resigning.

That would piss off everyone who enjoyed the first half since they were probably expecting more like it in the second. Haruhi chronologically has a few bumps of action after the 6th ep, but nothing that trumps it. The viewer would probably feel like they've seen all there is to see and lose interest before making it to the last episode. And if they did hold on to the series waiting for something big to happen again, all that they would get from it is an episode where it rains all day, they do something with the AC, and they walk home. I'm pretty sure the director knew what he was doing when he said "Hey, lets make sure the most dynamic and entertaining part of the plot is at the end."

I'm also glad I didn't. It was very good and like I always remembered Haruhi, also faithful to the book to my memory (although isn't endless eight supposed to come AFTER disappearance? whatevah, this way gave yuki more reason to flip out)

Kyon was great as always, he was so kawaii when he found out Haruhi existed
