Decided to check out the #capcom chat, half-jokingly said I went there to discuss how much SFxT is gonna suck and expected a cold reception. Instead, was received with open arms. Not a single person there is optimistic about the gem system, including some of the top dogs like MrWizard (high chance of SFxT being banned from EVO), ski, MarkMan, Keits, and UltraDavid (probably the most outspoken hater, has little hope for the game). I also got this quote supposedly from Seth Killian. I can't verify its authenticity, but no one in the chat disputed it (and it reads like oldschool S-Kill from Domination 101, IMO).

It really shows Capcom barely has a clue about how to make fighting games these days.

A shame, I was really excited about it before Pandora and gems were announced. The only issues were the magic series combos, which I assumed would be completely useless in favor of character specific combos, kind of like Marvel 3. The double character thing was so ridiculous, that I assumed it was going to be just a gimmick no one would ever use seriously.

I hope Namco gets pissed about this when the sales are bad. Tekken needs a boost with the FGC outside of Asia and this game could have done it until Capcom fucked it up with goofy bullshit. Tekken x Street Fighter is probably fucked too, even if it's amazing, because of the dogma that SFxTK has brought to the table. Not to mention it'll be a 3D game, which means 80% of the community won't give it a serious shot because they hate that there's a sidestep.

Another thing I've been hearing is that Ono's trying to make everybody happy, but at the same time it's really screwing him over, and the more I think about it the more I agree with it. He wants to make a game that can be easily accessible to new/casual fighting game players and make stuff like >>15596 less of a problem (although I disagree with it) but at the same time deep enough for hardcore/tournament players to enjoy. But the major problem is that those two things are the opposite, and it's incredibly difficult to do both successfully and for everybody to be happy.

But I think the whole gem system is a bit of a mess right now, you have people wanting to outright ban them in tournaments for gameplay/time restraint reasons, but then you have Capcom saying that they're "a big part of the game" and shouldn't be banned. Not to mention there was a lot of people looking forward to the game until the gem system was announced, and now I see nothing but negative comments about it. I feel like if there was some more info released (such as knowing how long it would take to pick gems in a game and how much they affect gameplay), there would be less of a negative reception towards it, but at the same time it seems like the damage has already been done.

look it's fine if you think this game is gonna be fun to play like a party game, but stop trying to defend it as an actual tournament fighter, unless capcom has some magic solution to all the problems the gem system will create (very unlikely, mind you).

Capcom's main games are always gold but their side games are always garbage. Instead of wasting your time with tripe like mvc3 or sfxt you should just play something slightly less trashy like mugen instead. That way you can personally nerf phoenix all you want and add 12 different versions of goku while you're at it. It's probably more viable competitively too.

Seth Killian confirmed that all players will have the option of not equipping gems before the match. It might also be possible, slim, chance that players might be able to save presets on a flash drive, memory card, or online account.

Personally, I think not giving full disclosure on how the system works has been a really poor choice. As more information comes out, it seems that most of the assumption people were making have been incorrect.

he's an extremely rounded character which is basically his appeal. low tiers were popular for having shit normals and shit specials. Q has at least enough to defend himself and punish well.

there's.. no hipster thing associated with Q afaik, he's just a solid low tier character to use which ends up being worth a lot as kuroda shows

  Q would be an awesome addition, the only other characters I'd want more would probably be Makoto or Alex. I'm pretty pleased with the Street Fighter side.

urien comparably is only slightly more fun to use cause he's got unblockables

there's tons of mixup game with Q and if he's used by anyone good, he's got a much more ominous presence than most other characters in the game. i dunno what else you could want from a character put together that well.

Aegis is definitely what sets Urien apart from Q, but it's not just because of the unblockables. Aegis is the tool that makes the character much more interesting to play. Use it to zone, force opponents into scary mixups, it's just so useful and versatile and that what makes it so fun to use.

What does Q have? Weird normals that will give you trouble till you learn how to parry them? And in hands of a good player, any top tier is a thousand times scarier than Q.

that's weird that you'd say his normals are awkward. they're really well rounded and situation efficient. Q obviously is no Ken or Ibuki, but he has pokes (c.mk c.lk), he has a meaty hit that can be canceled (s.mk), he has a good universal overhead, his jump-ins are desirable and he has a great, great jab. i forgot to mention his standing back strong which is great anti-air.

those normals alone overall beat seans, oros, alex's under a lot of cirumstances, a lot of necro's normals don't really compare either. what you're talking about is character philosophy, and not so much the pragmatic use of a character. Urien's use is versatile, yes but Q also has options depending on his match-up. the same flaws urien has Q might be able to work around and vice versa. it really just comes down to the basic overall usefulness of the character and Q funnily enough has a enough moves to form extremely sophisticated strategies. whereas urien normally must stick to aegis and shoot for mixup games and unblockables.

why do you think it's always so surprising, amazing or incredible when urien players exhibit yomi? people sure aren't surprised at the player, they're surprised at uriens small list of moves being used so conveniently and intelligently. for example a working walk up c.HP is always, always incredible because it's just such a risky move for urien no matter the circumstance, and yet players do it, and people still acknowledge it as something to behold. and Q, in another example gets his crowd from things like neutral dash punch to punish a whiffed sweep. that's a case of techincal skill, not a case of foresight or unblockables.

I claim that any sophistication or beauty you see in Q is simply an effect of good players making intelligent use of his tools, amplified by the appeal of the underdog, and NOT something inherent to the character.

nah, people who play a lot of fighters can see the inherent worth in Q almost instantly after watching one of his matches. whether you are inclined to notice that, or whether others are or are not inclined to notice that, isn't something i can dispute over the net here, but yeah. he's just a good character to use.

and if i wanted to talk about underdog characters, Q would not be the first on my list. oro is a shit, shit character in terms of battle rationality, he just has very small frame of useful moves for 3s. he's the underdog of 3s most definitely because his normals are just so ass and you have to connect a s.hp to get ANY of his combos going. but he has a leg up on the lower tiers and has an unblockable, along with great chip, so he has his moments.

but in terms of overall efficacy, Q IS the champion low tiers in 3S. moreso than hugo, and definitely more than twelve or sean, Q has options that make him a very hard fight.

i think you just need to play a really solid Q to understand how harshly he can punish mistakes or how well he can bait you out, or how thick his defense can really get during a battle of attrition.
