I want to get some new clothes soon, I'm thinking of going towards a new fashion since I'm tired of wearing a loose t-shirt+jeans and boots almost every day, it's just so incredibly bland and I've been dressed like this forever. Every now and then I'll wear a button up or a t-shirt over a long sleeved shirt but that's about it.

For someone who knows NOTHING about fashion, where do I start if I want to stop looking so bland and wear something nicer? What kind of shirts should I wear instead?

Everyone's going to tell you to buy the exact same button-up shirts for $60 from American Apparel. Also, skinny jeans.

why on earth would you buy a BUTTONUP from american apparel guffaw
buy sneakers
buy raw denim
buy t-shirts that actually fit (this doesnt mean TIGHT)

just buy a bunch of plain american apparel t-shirts in your size, buy jeans that fit (at least slim fit jeans if you arent a muscley guy cuz straight generally just looks baggy on most people) and buy shirts that you can layer with stuff like white/black/band t-shirts

just cause youre wearing a t-shirt and jeans doesnt mean youre bland cuz imo its totally pointless to select some kind of super-coordinated megaeffort outfit if you arent going out for a special occassion, getting drunk in town, a party or posing for lookbook.nu pics (lmao) seriously just buying like a striped t-shirt is flash enough for everyday wear

oh yeah, some more important things.

people watch, if you're walking to the grocery store or whenever, take notice of what everybody around you is wearing.

a checklist you can organize yourself from most important to least important:

feels good/fits well
looks nice
cheap

remember, what looks good on another person MAY NOT LOOK GOOD ON YOU AT ALL. take in mind your body shape (fat, thin, tall, short, etc) your hair color and shape, your skin color, and your face structure. if you have a feminine face then you can wear fairy boy clothing, but if you have a rough face it'll look funny if you try to wear those kind of clothing.

colors matter for your skin/hair color, it can either make your skin color more dull or bright or bring out your hair color. try on a lot of clothing in the mirror. a good reference is to wear complements of your color, so if you have blond (yellow) hair you wear a warm blue, and if you wear a bright color like lime and your skin is pale it'll make it look darker and oranger

back to the people watching, when picking out clothing get something appropriate for your town and season

choose clothing to show off your personality as well, it's the first thing people see when they see you so make a point. you want to say "im relaxed, im laid back" wear something plain, casual. you want to say "im tough or i think i am" you wear military styled clothing.

theres a lot to think about, it takes time to really get good clothing that works for you and it won't happen overnight. don't worry about it too much, just keep looking

in b4 common sense
>> ID: 49d742 0 No. 5299
if you get essentials that arent too garish (ie. no obnoxious graphic shirts or bright colours) then you can augment them with season-appropriate wear for example:

spring/summer - check or denim shirt over t-shirt and shorts, dont make overall look too dark

autumn - hoodie or denim jacket (sometimes both) or v-neck jumper, go for earthy tones

winter - coat plus hoodie underneath when raining and appropriate scarf, dark look totally fine

plus check shirts never go out of style, just get long-sleeved ones and roll them up, short-sleeved ones (especially brightly coloured onse) tend to make you look like your average middle-aged british man down the pub on a saturday night. and if you see anything called 'madras' stay the fuck away and leave that to annoying frat bros/chavs and middle-aged men

its really not hard at all to look good without putting shitloads of money/effort into it

>>5298

fyi dressing to show off your personality is pointless these days unless you go around wearing black metal longsleeves or leather trenchcoats all the time

plenty of good advice itt, heres just a couple things from me but keep in mind ive only had any interest in what i wear whatsoever for a few months now

if youre fat or you plan on working out/dieting in the near future, dont bother buying clothes now it would be a waste

fit is the single most important thing about determining whether or not to buy a piece of clothing, if it doesnt fit and fit well dont fucking buy it

no one can tell you what certain things are best to buy, although general suggestions like >>5291 are good, you need to figure out what you want for yourself. easiest way to do this is shit like fashion blogs and stuff, and there are so fucking many its hard to recommend any but ill just leave this here instead http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=102895 <a bunch of fashion blog links etc. in that thread

personally the only ones i look at are http://streetetiquette.com/ , and "what are you wearing today" threads at superfuture.com and styleforum.net

lastly, as for where to buy clothes, you obviously have 2 options, local and online. if you live in a more metropolitan area good for you you probably have alot of options, if you live in a shithole like me, however, youre stuck buying clothes online, and theres a good chunk of sites for that, youll probably like some and not others depending on what style of clothing youre after (and yes im going to whore out all of my invite links)

http://www.gilt.com/invite/eternaldrake
gilt is kind of all over the place, theyll have suits and 2000$ blazers one day and streetwear shit the next day, its definately a good place to check up on though because im sure theyll have stuff you like sooner or later

http://www.plndr.com/plndr/MembersOnly/Login.aspx?r=1324081
plndr sorta sucks ass imo, the sales they have are usually really good but the shit they sell is usually really shitty imo, there owned by karmaloop.com so that sorta gives you an idea of what they carry, but ive picked up a few things from there myself

http://www.jackthreads.com/invite/jonathonmccullough
mostly streetwear some more contemporary brands at time, i like this site alot more than plndr, ive bought more shit off here than anywhere

i also use the buying/selling forums on styleforum.net superfuture.com and hypebeast.com , you can find some good stuff that way if youre patient and check regularly, and the clothing discussion forums on the first two are a great place to get help/inspiration; these sites are also really good to monitor because youll know when sales on certain sites pop up

you can use ebay as well, but it can be very tricky depending on what youre looking for. if you want to try to find some vintage stuff, ebays a great place to look although you might need to have a tailor handy to get a real good fit. you can find alot of shit on ebay really but you have to be very careful for fakes and shit, ask dom about it he knows more than i do

i dont have much more to add than that really, >>5291 uniqlos a good brand you should maybe check them out, and if you need basics i would recommend blankapparel.com or if you want american apparel specifically gotapparel.com

(american apparel banned wholesale of their shit but gotapparel still wholesales them for some reason, probably the only place youll find doing it)

thats all i can think of really just remember above anything else IT MUST FUCKING FIT

1 question why is superfuture such a shitty layed out site
like every time i go to look there i stop halfway through cause its fucking obtuse
i guess they place style above functionality even on the internet
>> ID: 62890e 0 No. 5313
>>5311
yea superfuture does look dumb the sad part is thats their newly revamped site as of like a year ago or some shit

the worst part is that inside the forums there is 2 and a half pages of every tag ever used below the list of threads

cowboy hat, button shirt, blazer, necklace

or just walk around the mall and look at the mannequins at various stores. whatever you like, ask a store person lady if you can try it on. if you like it, buy it!

dont go to anime conventions? rofl
but seriously different glasses + different shoes (then again i guess if you were walking around looking at scantily clad japanese cartoons all day you would be wearing tennis shoes anyway since thats a fair deal of walking)

i hate japan i went to hang out with all the cool kids from fa

yeah, i've been looking for new shoes, but it's hard finding stylin' shoes that are size 12 & wide. it's a shame too, i'm really digging some of the pony shoes for sale up on jackthreads.

i need new glasses, but my prescription means that they're hella expensive (probably 300+) so i probably won't be replacing them until they break

I hate that. I would have retired my emo frames by now and gotten some fuckin bigass MEGATRON dorkus glasses but I'd have to pay out of pocket for them so I'm just waiting until obamacare kicks in and I get back on my dad's swank government health insurance

also xoxo I made my first purchase at gilt. goddamn most of their shit is ridiculously expensive even after their "markdowns" but these shoes were pretty reasonably priced and I could just a new pair of sneakers

currently i wear size 12 wide shoes (that are really closer to 11.5, but it's easier to find 12 wide than 11.5)
