Slashdot posted an article today about what's happening to Megaupload's data. Essentially, most of the data on Megaupload was on servers owned by one of two companies: Cogent Communications and Carpathia Hosting. The FBI never actually seized the servers, and since they froze all of Megaupload's assets, no one is paying the hosts to keep the data. It's all going to be deleted.
Is this good for the individual users? In a way, yes. If all the files on Megaupload are gone, it would be impossible for the RIAA/MPAA to sue anyone. They could have your IP, link it to you, but without the actual file there's no way they could prove one way or the other that you actually downloaded or uploaded anything in violation of their copyright.
However, all of the original files on Megaupload (including things like rare manga scans) are gone, as is any chance of Megaupload being able to prove they weren't basing their company around hosting copyright-infringing material.
